After the Civil War, The army went into the south to make sure people were treating the Freedman equally and they were until the army went back to the north, it all went back to racism and segregation, but no more slaves though. The way the south treated the Freedman wasn't good, it was better, but not good. The way they the separated the Freedman from the white people is making 2 versions of everything so they dont go to the same places, or use the same things, different schools, different library's, different stores, different water fountains etc. When Abraham Lincoln was trying to free the slaves, there was still a lot of things happening in the background of his decisions. When Abraham Lincoln was running for president, the south hated him because he wanted to do stuff that the north liked, and when he was elected, the south tried and succeeded to break away from the US. When the slaves got the same rights as white people, the white people protested and rioted anywhere they could, but mostly in front of the White House.
